Summoned Units Question
Modified By JRacel on 4/9/2011 11:54:36 AM)

After reading the rules several times, I must say I am stumped as to what the advantage is of having Summoned Units?  When I first saw this "Ability" listed, I thought it would reduce point cost since you had to expend points just to get the units on the battlefield, but I noticed that this actually cost points to purchase.  In regards to that cost, it says some units take more move points than others, how does that relate to the point costs for army building?

What advantage do Summoned Units have that I am not seeing?  I know they do not count as destroyed if they are not summoned into the battle, but that does not seem like much?  I guess you can also just bring them into the game whereever they are needed in a hurry, but not sure if that make is worth it or not.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff,

Playing with summoned units is about strategy and good die rolls. Basically, the total of your field units and the total summoned will still add up to 40pts. Think of summoned units as sneak attacks. Your right, you can bring them into a game when you need them and that is the key.

I'll tell you how Jason plays his Mage Legion army.  Basically, he wants you to face his main/core group with his General and Mage in the front. He tries some small skirmishes on the field with his scouts and tries to goad you into a core attack, your group and his group.

Now, MOST core groups when they meet head to head are pretty close FS wise. So, let's say Jason's group has a 19 and you have a 21 Fighting score. To Pull Off an ARMY killer, must Roll High on his MP. He needs at least a 4 if he has a lower Fighting Score. There are some variation he does, but let's say he gets the 4.

- Jason Charges.  now his FS is 20 to your 21. (He used 2 Mp)
- Jason Summons a cheap elemental(Say a FS1/1) BEHIND You within 4" (He uses 1 MP)
-Jason Spends 1 MP to move the elemental into a Rear attack.

So Jason has used 4 MP and now the FS looks like this:
Jason FS 20(because of Charge +1)
Your FS 20(Becuase of Suprise attack -1)

Now you say, wow, that is alot of work and luck just to make things even... but here is the army killer. If Jason wins and drives you back, Your entire Group is destroyed.
Because you have an enemy to the rear and your army cannot move through it...

And that is why you never let anyone get behind you :)

Re: Summoned Units Question

Thanks a lot Mike, that makes a lot more sense and I can see the tactical advantage it provides.

Currently it is 1 point to add summon, but are there other rules for the harder to summon units that need extra points to bring them into the battle?

Jeff

Re: Summoned Units Question

***Oops, I messed up there. You would also have the FS of the Unit behind you added to the mix. I for got to add that one.

These rules only have the 1 point cost. In Mage codex/book, we will have more spells and Tougher units that will cost alot more.

Re: Summoned Units Question

I guess I was a bit confused with this as well Mike. The thing that confused me was the Mushroom Herders on the website. They have the stats:

Mushroom Herds (2 @ 7)        14        3”        5,2       Monstrous, Summoned II

In the army builder, you have 5 AP for the Monstrous Unit, but these cost 7 each, so it appears as though Summoned II will cost 2 points. Why would you pay another point to make it harder to summon them?

Or is it because they are worth more than 3AP, meaning that you MUST pay for Summoned II as a penalty?

Also, their movement is listed at 3", but in the army builder, the movement is 4". Is this a typo? Sorry for the questions, I plan on building a Gnome army for my fiance' and wanted to get the stats right in my head.

Cheers mate,
Ben.

PS. You mentioned the Mage codex/book, is this something that will follow this base game quickly or will there be a wait? Also, are their other books with more specials planned? I have lots of ideas that are brewing... :-)
