i like the idea of having a item on them to pick up like a staff, treasure chest, book of spells, etc... that could be fun to make or purchase

For bigger games that may last longer or campaign games, it could be fun to have some items that could be placed on the map that you would have to fight for or pick up.  This would give some minor objectives that could be a part of the overall game.  This way you could make your army stronger as the game or campiagn progressed.

I have been working on something like this for the an Advanced Campaign Book. Think the objectives like Lord of the Rings. The idea is this.

The Campaign is broken down into mini adventures. You lead your 40pt army against an opponet through a Series of Challenges or Adventures. The first one may be a quest for a powerful sword (that can be used by a general and does something), the second may be to secure a Gold Mine (get a treasure chest that allows you to Summon mercenaires or Buy off enemy units) and the third may be some magical talisman adventure. A big one may be fighting a den of VERY Powerful Dragons atthe same time.

Each of these adventures represent battles or in some cases, Land Grabs, and each comes with a reward. I would offer the adventure as a PDF or Hard copy and then sell adventure packs with the items inside to be painted and used with teh characters.

I really like the idea of the campaign system. Especially with small goals such as magical items as well as the normal grab for land style.

Other goals/objectives could be things like if you control the province of 'x' you can create an alliance with the 'x' tribe that allows your army to pass through without triggering a fight.

You could also have terrain effects on your troops for the battle. If you have rested before the battle you may get an advantage in some respect, but if your army has marched across rocky crags and gone straight into battle, it may be disadvantaged due to fatigue etc... just some ideas floating around.
