Battle Report: Alexandrian Army vs. Barbarian Raiders
Today my son and I fought this battle using our home mod for Mighty Armies. James' had the barbarian horde and I commanded the Alexandrian Army with the august King Alexander at the center of the line with his chief mage Achem. Alexander wasted no time and as soon as the raiders were in sight he ordered his 2 cavalry groups to head round the enemy and attack their shamans from the rear or flanks. He then ordered the bulk of his battleforce to march forward and form ranks to prepare for the inevitable onslaught.

As the Alexandrian cavalry approached the barbarian shaman on the enemy's right flank began to weave a spell as he traced symbols in the air with his crooked and notched wooden staff. The air cracked and the sky thundered as a bolt of lightening shot out from the shamans staff and disintegrated the hapless cavalry troopers on contact. The shaman on the left flank attempted the same but Sigmar be praised the shot disappated in the air. Alexander ordered his heavy ballista to fire on the barbarians lines and the crew responded by unleashing hell on the right flank shaman sending him to the nether reaches.

For the rest of the battle the surviving barbarian shaman's power was kept in check by the Alexandrian wizard, Achem. His magical weaves of protection kept the army safe from the effects of the shamanistic magic.

Finally the main groups of the two armies met in close combat with shield on shield and pitched screams of savage fury. Both sides pushed each other to and fro but slowly the Alexandrian Army windled down the savage barbarians. Realizing his great host had either fled or been killed the barbarian chieftan turned with his guards and ran from the borders of Alexandria.
----------------------------------------------------------
We each had 40 AP armies. I deployed with my general in the center with mage on his right both surrounded by spears with long range archers behind. Artillery setup on the generals group's right flank in base contact with two cavalry units, each on extreme flank ends about 5 or so inches from the main battle group. Enemy deployed similarly with his shamans guarding each flank of his center line.

I got first turn and sent my cavalry out at their full movement of 6". Then advanced my main group forward 3 inches leaving my artillery in place. Enemy advances entire army straight forward then enemy shaman blasts my left cavalry unit to dust with a lightening spell. My turn I continue my right cavalry advance towards his closest shaman. Center group holds, artillery now in range blasts away offending shaman that burned up my left cav. But this time I had my solitary mage cast Arcane Shield to protect my army from the last shaman and his bag of tricks.

Arcane Shield worked wonders as enemy shamy tried to desentegrate my last cavalry unit with a bolt of lightening but failed. Contact with enemy made, no massacres. Close combat continued until barbarians had 6 points remaining when my artillery got free from close combat obstacles and started to rain death down on the raiders.

I made sure I cast arcane shield every turn and it never failed the rest of the game. It was awesome!

As far as our mod goes I spent most of last night and early this morning coming up with a points system for MA. Came up with something very close and decided to play with it until the new rules come out. I played the game with my DBM Alexandrian Macedonian Army. A picture of the initial stages of the battle can be seen at my fantasy campaign blog listed below.

I am very happy that RM picked up MA and most of all that I discovered this awesome fantasy game.

Sounds like a good battle.  I do think you will like the new build your own army rules.  It will make for a wide variety of armies to battle with.  I also have an Alexandrian Macedonin army that I am going to base for Mighty Armies, but it is still in line to be painted, right behind King Arthur's Romano British clan that I am currently working on.

same here. although my romano-brits are in the early project stages and have been sitting on the back burner of my mind for some time. 3 years ago I had a 25mm gripping beast romano-brit army but like an idiot I sold it on eBay to fund my warhammer habbit. i tried to partly base my arthurians on the novels written by jack whyte the Camulod Chronicles.

Re: Battle Report: Alexandrian Army vs. Barbarian Raiders

I've just started looking into the Romano-British / Arthurian history.  Seems like quite a bit of difference on the history of Arthur.  I first got interested in the army when I saw the figures on Splintered Light.  I purchased the army, then started looking into the history.  My Infantry is almost finished, now on to the Cavalry.  I really like the Splintered Light figures.
