Anglo-Saxon Shieldwall

I was thinking about the best way to model an Anglo-Saxon Shieldwall (or a greek hoplite phalanx). At first, I thought "disciplined" was the way to go, but after one lost combat a unit would retreat 3" and this would break the battle line. This didn't seem right given how Harold's troops performed at Hasting. They seemed to stay put until the bitter end. So, I think "fearless" would be best.

Thoughts?

Re: Anglo-Saxon Shieldwall

Its almost a bit of both.  I'm unsure how the Anglo Saxon's worked, but from what I read of a Phalanx, there was lots of pushing and shoving involved until one side broke and ran.  So you could model a "shove" as being diciplined, or you could assume the shoving is not very much, and instead they just sit there, taking punishment until they are eventually destoryed.

Re: Anglo-Saxon Shieldwall

Actually what about this:

A Hoplite Phanlanx or Saxon Shield Wall are defensive spearmen.

They therefore get to cast the command "Shield Wall" on themselves every turn for free.  Of course they can't move if they wish to do this.

I think that and making them diciplined would be probably do the trick.  So when they get charged, they are less likely to recoil, but if they charge, they lose the cohesion of the wall.

Spartan hoplites or really "fearless" hoplites would also be able to buy fearless..?

Re: Anglo-Saxon Shieldwall

Chris,

This sounds good. I'll try it out the next time I play.

Re: Anglo-Saxon Shieldwall

That does sound like a good solution!
