Comment about spears of this era:
Spears are indeed probably not longer than 8 feet and probably more like 5-6 feet usually. They are meant as either a melee weapon or as a heavy missile weapon. They are not counterweighted like the hoplite spear hundreads of years earlier so you cannot "choke back" on the weapon effectively to get a reach advantage. You have to hold it somehwre in the middle thuse only giving you about 2-3 feet of spear in front of you. So clearly it is a melee weapon as Richard said earlier. I do think it could have some advantage against cavalry.
Long spears are not out of the question as well. The welsh, picts and possibly the scots of the post "arthurian" period (650 AD and beyond) are thoughtt o have used long spears of 8 feet+. I imagine this is where the Scots get their idea for a schiltron in the Maedieval period (1100AD+)
Now, the real question is, what good are they in game terms!? :)
As for a side arm, it is likely going to be a long knife or a short sword of some sort. Some of the poorer soldiers might use a club. The more established warriors (knights etc) would have longer blades. This game effect can be reflected in the combat factor I think and no special rule is required.
